The implementation of the “Cammino di San Michele” (Saint Michael’s Way), a 150 km cycling and hiking route spanning 30 Municipalities in the province of Alessandria, is currently in its operational phase.

The Province of Alessandria, as the Lead Partner, has finalized the executive design through its appointed professionals. The intervention is supported with €750,000.00 allocated from FUNT (National Single Tourism Fund) resources and the remaining portion from co-financing by the Piedmont Region.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To develop and equip the “Cammino di San Michele” infrastructure to enhance the territory’s tourist appeal, promoting a model of slow, sustainable, and accessible tourism, in line with regional hiking network standards.

PLANNED INTERVENTIONS (WORK PACKAGES / ACTIONS)
The itinerary will be implemented through the following key actions:

Installation of Integrated Signage: Implementation of a vertical and horizontal signage system compliant with regional hiking network standards. This includes:

Route and itinerary markers (flags);
Location boards and directional arrows.
Creation of Informational Panels: Design and installation of informative, educational, and thematic panels. The textual and infographic content will be provided by local stakeholders (Municipalities). At least one panel is planned for installation at starting/ending points and at strategic nodes along the route (stages, variants).

Development of Rest Areas and Pilgrim Services: Identification and setup of equipped rest areas to accommodate hikers, which will include the installation of e-bike charging stations.

Creation of Low-Cost Accommodation for Hikers: Development of a network of low-cost accommodation facilities, in line with the principles of sustainable tourism. These facilities, identified in properties already available to the Municipalities, will be entrusted to local management to ensure their usability by hikers.

Accessibility Improvement: Creation of an equipped section of the route to ensure full usability by people with disabilities or reduced mobility, promoting the itinerary’s inclusivity.
